"Life is Full of the Little Things"

Christina Sensabaugh
> Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center (HCC)

“Life is full of the little things.”  Never have I fully understood this simple statement until this year. It is true in every area of my life, from my bus ride to the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center (HCC) in Pittsburgh, to my lunch time surprise patient, to the neighbor I say goodnight to as I take out the trash.

While I could talk about all the little things in my life, my experiences and our patients at the Health Care Center dominate my thoughts and my prayers.  Perhaps the defining moment came when that patient, usually grumpy, finally smiled back. No, I think it was the moment when that other patient gave me a tear soaked hug. Or, perhaps it was the moment when that patient remembered my name. Actually, it was all of those moments, and so many more.

Our patients receive excellent medical and dental care at the Health Care Center. We have sent patients to the emergency room based on their EKGs, cleaned up mouth infections for transplant surgeries and diagnosed cancer. In addition to this exceptional clinical work our staff and volunteers provide everyday, there is so much more to an experience at the HCC.

A former patient describes it best. “I always feel better when I leave,” he said. “Everyone here is so nice and helpful and they all seem like they want to be here. It gives me a strength and happiness that I carry throughout the day.”

When I began the program I thought I would succeed in my position based on my skills acquired from previous experiences. I did not realize the power of a smile, a hello, or a sincere “how are you?” It is not easy to smile at a seemingly unhappy person, or to say “how are you?” and actually care about the answer. Yet, the rewards are numerous.
