Jackie M. Pyrdek Today, I read the phrase “after six months in the Change-A-Heart program…” and mentally scoffed. Six months does not seem like very much time and, obviously, so much has happened since my Change A Heart orientation retreat. How am I supposed to share just one thing I have learned in these past few months? I suppose I will just have to give it a whirl. Ironically, that sentiment is one of the most intriguing to have rubbed off on me this year, “just give it a whirl.” Be it through trying, digital photography with two-year-olds; swing dancing, making bread with two dozen other people; attacking a seemingly imperturbable mountain of snow; or opening up about a tough situation to a new friend, I have found that a lot of excitement and enlightenment can come from willingly entering into unexpected situations. Even though my personal talents do not fall into any of these admittedly specific categories, it is thrilling to discover that I can not only achieve, but come to enjoy, these challenges! With this newfound attitude, I am gaining the confidence to approach a whole new medley of daunting experiences. Hopefully, as I give the next six months a whirl, I am able to discover many more of the exciting surprises that await me.
