Living the Values

Service
MFVP provides the volunteers an opportunity to live out a “preferential option for the poor” through full-time service for justice and peace at a variety of non-profit social service agencies. They work for agencies and with people of need, learning first-hand about the injustices of our world. The work of the volunteers ranges from direct service with the poor to working for structural change, and may involve a commitment to the Church’s social teachings of promoting justice for all. Following in the footsteps of St. Francis, the volunteers are encouraged at all times to see Christ in the faces of the poor.

Through their own experiences, and those with whom they live, volunteers are exposed to the complexities of the injustices faced by the poor in our society. They have the opportunity to examine the causes of injustice in the United States, and to search for creative, long-term solutions which may include faith-filled responses, and to “preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” (St. Francis of Assisi).
